StumbleUpon Just Flooded My Blog with Visitors
Hi all,
I write reviews for blogs and Web sites on my blog on Mondays, and this past Monday I wrote a review for a travel-type blog.
Today I checked my Web site statistics and noticed that I had over 200 visitors from StumbleUpon visit my site. Those visitors viewed my latest review on the travel blog.
I usually get 40-50 visitors per day in total at this moment, so the 200+ was a surprise to me. I'm guessing the author of the blog stumbled the review and then others picked it up. I'm sure everything will be back to normal tomorrow, but I wonder what else will happen with future reviews.

TechieGuy that's great! Every now and then I'll get a surge from stumbleupon too and even though it's short-lived, it's still nice to get the extra visits. Just think... even if only a handful subscribe to your RSS feed that's still well worth it. Congrats!
I didn't realize you wrote reviews for other blogs. Great tactic. I've heard a lot of people finding success doing that. Good for you. Seems like a great way to build traffic long-term.

Writing reviews was something I thought about for some time. My blog is about technology, but I wanted to review more than technology blogs and sites, so I thought about it a little as many of them won't be related to my blog.
I did decdie to do it for several reasons:
1. Provide others with at least one backlink from my site. This will help new blogs or those starting out with their sites. In return they may provide a link to my blog form their's. It has happened on one blog.
2. Provide some additional visitors that I may not otherwise get from technology searches alone, such as the StumbleUpon from today.
3. Get to view some interesting blogs and sites that I may not have found on my own.
4. Brush up on my review skills, just in case I decide to do paid reviews.
I usually try to be somewhat detailed in my reviews and it takes me about 2 hours to write one. The authors of the blogs/sites that I have reviewed have provided positve feedback to me, which helps to keep me going.

stumble upon is a great source of visitors. Whenever i write a new article on my blog, i always submit it to stumble upon and digg. stumble upon always crushes digg like a fly, in terms of traffic.
But only a fraction of that traffic gets converted into real loyal viisitors

Stumbleupon is a great way to gain lots of traffic fast but for the most part it can be very difficult to convert the traffic into either long time readers or even customers. I always try and use catchy title that stands out from everyone else.

On a side note Techie, make sure to get yourself up to speed on how Google view blog reviews etc.

Thanks for the info Gavin. I'll read up on how Google handles reviews.

well stumbleupon is a traffic source alright! I got 211 visitors from it yesterday(8th Dec). Only 1 day and 211 visitors!
But sadly, most of them didn't convert...

Stumbleupon is amazing for traffic. One of my recent posts about fast food received over 5000 visitors in just 4 days. They averaged just over 2 pageviews each (10,819 total views).
Converting that traffic is not easy but I did pick up more than 20 new RSS subscribers.
I don't know if anyone else has had a problem with this, but I think google hates SU users. I track all the outgoing clicks (mybloglog does that for me too). In that 4 day period I had a ton of adsense clicks (can't post exact #'s because of TOS) but they were in the triple digits. Anyway adsense recorded all the impressions but I was credited for 0 clicks. I wrote to them but haven't heard back yet.
Back on topic SU is great for finding new sites too. Check me out I have the same user name there as I do here.
Techie guy thanks again for the review of my blog. It brought quite a bit of traffic to me.
Lisa how much traffic does SU generate for this site?

Can I get into SU without using the ToolBar?
I really need the room and can't stand having another toolbar taking up space I need to see financial charts and accounts (when browsing). Can I do anything with SU without another toolbar?

As far as I know you have to have the tool bar to use stumble, but you don't have to leave it up if you don't want to. I downloaded the toolbar and I just turn it on when I want to use it.
I am having a strange problem with my del.icio.us toolbar right now. It won't stay off. Every time my browser reloads, it re-appears, even though I uncheck it in my toolbar settings. I may have to give up IE7 and try out Firefox.

You could use this fantastic Firefox plug in instead
I found this cool Firefox plug in which allows you to hide the menubar! The menubar is only visible when you press the Alt key. I think that's great since I dont use the menubar so much. I use keyboard shortcuts. If you want to save some working space, this plugin is for you:
