I believe there were a few problems with 2.8, but some of them were fixed in 2.8.1 and 2.8.2. I waited to upgrade to 2.8 because of the problems, but since I upgraded to the latest version, I haven't seen any problems.
A good tip to upgrade is to run Wordpress on your local machine with your theme and then upgrade that first. If everything looks good, upgrade your hosted blog.

I had similar picture problems when I up graded to 2.8.1. It turned out I wasn't the only one that had the same problem. Pictures were not uploading at all.
I deactivated all my plug ins and activated them one after the other. It turned out it was a plug in problem. But I just upgraded to 2.8.2 yesterday and so far so good

Plugins and 2.8.2
Of course it pays to be extra careful when updating your wordpress installation. Most of the time if you have any issues they are going to be with a plugin.
It's always a good idea to do a backup just before you update, especially if your blog is highly developed and modified.
Before updating your wordpress installation its also a good idea making sure all your plugins are updated to the latest versions which may help prevent any problems.

Good point about the plugins Bluefox. Plugins are probably the major headache when upgrading Wordpress. Some plugins just may not work with newer versions until their author's update the plugin to support the new version.
That is also another reason I wait. By the time I update, most of the plugins I have installed have usually been updated to support the newest version.

Agree. I also load the new version on my local machine first.

The only complaints I have read about with the new WP is all the redirect errors, CodePress syntax highlighter, the visual editor and widgets being reset when a theme is switched. There seems lots of plugins that use jQuery are having issues as well.

I agree,
I run multiple blogs off the latest and for some reason the WYSIWYG editor works for one theme and fails miserably on the other theme.
Your problem maybe is due to the theme you're using...
