Default Should I upgrade my wordpress to its latest version or no?

It reads "WordPress 2.8.2 is available! Please update now." on top of my admin.

I was wondering if its good to update or not.

Also if I do, would it mess anything up? because i altered some things like in single.php file and etc.

thanks

I'm assuming you mean the single.php file that is in your theme folder? Remember when you update WordPress it only updates the root WordPress files and doesn't touch the files in your theme folder. So you should be fine. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

Lisa you are right for the most part as most of the security issues with the theme handling have been solved. I have updated several WP sites and there seems to be no changes to the theme index.php The only update I have seen that caused issues with themes was back a few years ago when they where still in the RC stage.

I had a similar concern but opted to do nothing because my host provided Wordpress. I'm just assuming they will update their servers in time.

Your host will update their servers in time yes. but they will not update your blog. As your blog is in a separate folder from what they update. Basically they will only update the install files for their service. Once installed your on your own.

See, I just assumed my Wordpress copy was on their server. I'll have to look into updating.

Hosts would usually have the full install of Wordpress, but updating everyone would require them to know which users are using Wordpress.

It is easy to update though since the newer version provide a link from the Dashboard which does the update for you.

I recommend that before updating that you backup your database, just in case.
