First blog posts?
For people who want to start a blog, what should the first post be about?
Should it just jump straight into the topic?
Or should it be one of those typical "welcome to my blog" messages?

I think it depends on where you are in the cycle. For example if you already have a trafficked site and are launching a blog, a welcome page or explanation to help define the purpose of your blog may be helpful to give your blog an identity compared to your website.
But if this is your first blog post and you have no other website, blog or traffic base, then I don't really see the point of a welcome page. Of course you could briefly mention this is a new blog but get to main content sooner or later. There's a way to do it so you welcome people yet still provide useful information. For example, you could discuss why you created the blog and more importantly how its content will help your target audience.
Remember, due to how blog content is generated (newest post first) most blog posts get buried after a short while. And if someone is searching through your archives to find older content, are they really going to be interested in your Welcome page? I say get to the content right away.

When I started my blog I didn't have a web site. My first post was a welcome post, which I introduced myself and the reason for starting the blog.
As Lisa mentioned, since the blog posts are listed in chronological order, you first post will eventually be buried and probably never read, unless you have an established web site that can redirect users to your blog. For me, since I was just starting out, I had no visitors (or next to no visitors) for the first few months.

I'd go with a welcome post first. Explain who you are and what the purpose of your blog is. This is not only important for your visitors but also for yourself. If you go back and re-read It every now and then, it will help you to stay focused on the reason you started your blog in the first place.
Follow that post up immediately (the same day of the very next day) with your first real content post.

When I started my blog I did an about me business. I don't really have a traffic base and it's now "buried" on the 2nd page now. I don't know if anyone will read it but I did it that way just the same.

My first post was a martial art article as if it was my 100th post. I have at the top of my site a short introduction about me and my site so visitors feel more comfortable about reading my articles. Weather it works or not is another story.lol

The main advise i can give you is think what would you wont to see as the first post . If you have a idea just go for it. Mine most the time is and introduction to the site.

Just my stupid little opinion but, just post. Many people wait to long trying to do it right the first time. Not often does this happen no matter how much time, research, reference, and suggestions go into it. I think the right thing to do is to START.
Plus, if you ad a post a day, in month or two it will make little difference what your first post or tenth post was, as long as you stay on topic and have added good content to your site, the order of the posts will not make or break your listing success or potential of your new blog.
Good Luck,
Nick

Excellent point, Nick. Ken Evoy calls that the "ready set.... ready set...." mentality. People plan, plan, plan, and worry about getting it right the first time and never take the plunge. Even if it's wrong, you'll figure it out and learn from your mistakes (I know I've made many myself), so the point is to just do it.
