Question How to use Wordpress!

Ok! Ok! You guys have convinced me that I must start a blog to get traffic! My question is, should I get started right away by downloading WordPress and hosting it on my webhost or let WordPress host my blog for a while until I develop traffic.

Thanks guys for your response!

Have a great day everyone

It is entirely up to you which route you wish to take.

If it was me I will register a domain and install Wordpress via (cPanel) or FTP on a website hosting server.

Most of the top bloggers eg. John Chow, Shoemoney etc. recommend to have a wordpress blog standalone on own server or hosting comapny server with own domain name.

From there you can work on getting traffic to your site. If you have other websites then you can link to your Wordpress blog.

You can also participate in various related niche forums and get some traffic to your blog.

Hope this helped

I agree with Lajocar. Even if you aren't going to blog much in the beginning, might as well set it up for the long-run. Plus if you host your blog on WordPress' servers you can't use AdSense because they don't support Javascript. If you do decide to do what Lajocar said, use www.hostgator.com (if your host doesn't use cpanel). They have cpanel, awesome support and setting up your blog is quick and easy.

So if you have cPanel then it is just a matter of clicking install and there you go.

I am not convinced of this statement. I started reading the instructions from Word Press on how to install their blog and you have to be able to understand a lot of webmaster language. I started reading the so called guide lines for, “installing a blog in minutes,” and 45 minutes later I was still on like step three of twenty and that was only the first page of instructions. I got frustrated and decided I am going to need to get a real computer tech to help me on this one.

Really? Even with cpanel it wasn't quick? All you have to do is say "install wordpress". Now of course changing the blog template files takes a little bit of work but the initial setup usually just requires a few clicks if you're using cpanel.

Now if you are FTP-ing Wordpress and setting up a database and aren't familiar with that then yes, it can get tricky the first time.

I agree with Lisa,

It will take a couple of minutes to setup Wordpress if you use cPanel.
You just have to click a couple of buttons.

There are more technical stuff involved if you really play around with Wordpress.

What is c-panel? I am kinda new to this "Webmaster Babble" that's one of the points I am trying to make. I don't recall Word Press suggesting c-panel.

Default CPanel

CPanel is basically a contol panel that you can use on your web hosting server to manage every aspect of your website.

Go to www.cpanel.net to read more

Wordpress is just one of the extra programs that you can install via cPanel interface

Default That may still be confusing??? But...

Unless I am wrong, you can't use cpanel unless your host has it installed.

I would recommend first logging onto your host. When you do you will have some kind of control panel where all hosted accounts manage their site. cpanel is just one way many do it and seems very popular with many on this site. If your host has it there will be a way to install easily from there. You don't need to do all the stuff you are reading at WordPress unless you are installing by ftp. cpanel will do it for you.

I use Dreamhost and they do not use cpanel so if I have any details wrong someone may correct me. Dreamhost has their own version which they just call "control panel." Then they have what they call "One Clink Installs." With just a couple of clicks it will install Wordpress.

So check your host setup first to find out what you may need to do. They may be using cpanel or, which is my reason for chiming in, they may have another control panel system that will do the same thing. You would only have to figure out all that other stuff now if they do neither which is probably unlikely.

Default Word Press blog set-up a different perspective

Just wanted to check back and say thanks for giving me the correct direction for setting up the Word Press blog with my personal domain name.

I would like to clarify something though, the process was a little more complex than clicking a couple of links in a c-panel. It has been close to 24 hours in my case and I still do not have access to start building the Word Press blog.

Several representatives made the same type of references, just click here, click here and that should be all there is to it.

Here's my story, please understand that the est. times include holding times as the companies are busy as usual.

1) I had to contact my hosting company, after much discussion, they do not have the CT-panel features that was previously referred to. Est. time 30 minutes

2) I contacted two hosting companies by way of the phone and viewing their websites, Host Gator and Go Daddy. We discussed various hosting plans that would work. Est. time 45 minutes

3) I decided to go for it and purchased a hosting account. I did so while talking to a representative. Before getting off the ph he said follow the prompts for setting up Word Press blog. Estimated time 20 minutes

4) I had to get familiar with the hosting companies pages to find and follow the prompts, this required a lot of reading wading through many options to find the Word Press link. I tried it on my own but the companies terms were to short and obscure to follow. So, I Had to call reps again so I could get on the correct path, he helped and I completed the Word Press configuration.
Estimated time 30 minutes

5) Was told by a representative to check back in about 2 hours but that it could take up to 24 hours for the set up to be finalized.

6) Three hours after completing all the above, Word Press confirmed, all systems go. Except, when I accessed the Word Press link, in the new hosting account, it took me to an existing 404 error page that I have for my .com domain which is active with a different hosting company. I had registered to use a .org domain ( which has been parked at another hosting company for a while) for the Word Press blog. Est time 15 minutes

7) Called tech support, representative said he wasn't sure why and he put me on hold. He came back on the phone and said for me to wait over night and check it in the morning, if there was still a problem to call back. Est time 20 minutes

8) In the morning checked status, still error 404 page, called hosting account tech support. After much discussion discovered that the because the domain was parked at a different hosting company, there were more steps to take. He then explained that I would have to contact my other hosting company and give them two DNS codes which he provided.
Est time 30 minutes

Which by the way there was never any mention of this during the set up or by any of the several techs that I had talked to. The required step during the set-up was to enter the domain name to be used for the blog. There was no explanation as to if the domain was elsewhere further steps would be required.

9) Contacted the company where I had originally purchased the domain name and they said I would have to create a help ticket. The representative took me through the correct process.
Est. time 20 minutes

10) I am now waiting for the domain pointing to be finished, was told that it could take up to 48 hours before it is complete.

I really am very thankful to all of you for your input about how to get a Word press blog set up to have my own domain name. As you can tell I am in the learning process of how all of these things work. I just wanted to offer a different perspective to this forum post.

Hi Jordy,

wow... I am sorry to read all this, it is very annoying when you have an expectation for your site to be up right away, and then someone tells you it will be ready in 48 years.

Let us know if you have any specific questions to help you along the way
