Default WordPress Help

I recently decided to try a self hosted WordPress blog because of the freedom and flexibility. What I didn't realize, was that all those fancy extras have to be installed. I figured it would be similar to designing a website or using the WordPress hosted blogs. Boy was I wrong!
I'm already having difficulty and haven't really gotten started. I installed it through my Cpanel no problem. However, I see a meassage stating that I should update to the newest version. I have followed the instructions from WordPress and others and can not seem to get it going. I can use the blog but still see the need to update message. I would prefer doing it correctly from the start as I have less to loose if something goes wrong.
Any suggestions? Please keep in mind my knowledge of php and codes is limited.

Always Grateful,
Andrea

Andrea,

Download the newest version of Wordpress. Then ftp the different folders (of the new Wordpress version) to replace the old Wordpress files and folders that are stored on your public_html.

Is that what you tried?

Yep. It really only takes 5 minutes to upgrade. Are you familiar with FTP-ing? Let us know and we can help.

Once you get the update running, feel free to check back with any questions you have about site themes, plugins, or widgets. I've been using wordpress with my blog for quite a while now, and I couldn't be happier. You can do a ton of stuff to make your blog pretty incredible with the resources they provide.

Hi All,
Thanks for your suggestions. Unfortunately, I am not familiar with FTP-ing. If that makes all the difference please let me know what I should do next.
Always Grateful,

After you download the upgrade zip file, then go download Filezilla - it's a free FTP program. (If you use Firefox, then I recommend FireFTP - a plugin that works right inside Firefox)

Before you use the FTP program, go to your hosting control panel and create a new FTP account (username and password).

Open FileZilla (or FireFTP) and create a new profile and connect to your site via FTP. You should have to enter your server information (ftp.yourdomain.com) and then the username and password you just created at your hosting control panel.

Once you connect to your site you should see the folder structure of your entire website on the right side panel. Navigate to the folder where WordPress is installed.

Now follow the instructions in the upgrade zip. All you have to do is upload all the files in the upgrade.zip folder and replace the existing WordPress files.
