Yes, it's in fact mostly a waste of time. It would be much better to work on your blog at that time.
It is a waste of time depending on which directories you submit to. For example, if you have a blog, it is to your advantage to submit it to directories like mybloglog and blogcatalog. Both of these directories can help you meet other bloggers and get some amount of traffic. Blindly submitting to non relevant directories is not recommended.

suggest that you actually just continue to place fresh content on you blog every day out of the week. Make sure you post about 3-4 times on information that will give value to people and just rift raft!
There was an interesting article on SEOmoz a while ago that said specialist directories can be good (because they add real value for users, so you'll probably get linkjuice and - shock! - visitors), but that general ones usually aren't. I can't find it right now (of course), but here are a couple of posts on the same topic.

Yeah I wouldn't waste the time and energy that most likely wouldn't at least give me back what I put in to it. As others have stated just keep updating your blog with good info and submit to reputable directories and you should be just fine.

Charcoal and pencil, you've done the research
You yourself said that you have submitted one of your sites to lots of directories
Did they help your website's ranking?
In what proportion if the directories you submitted to were your sites actually accepted?
Having done the test with your website, I think all you need to do is analyze if the directory submissions helped your website
If the answer is yes, then by all means submit the blog to the directories
Obviosly if the answer is no, then you know and can focus your attention elsewhere

yes i think so you should submit your site to blog directories.
I don't think it is worth your time. I never even heard of Dmoz before I started building my website and it is the most valuable directory out there. These other directories are really just there for show.
What I do is I look for a couple of my competitors names and see if they signed up for a directory that I maybe looking at and if they are, then I submit an application for it. That might work for you if you just feel that you need to submit to a directory.
I would maybe pick 10 of the best directories and that should be enough. In fact i never even submit to directories anymore but it would not hurt doing so. Just focus on higher quality links after that and always try to keep your link profile natural.

So you guys mean submitting a blog to directories is a waste of time, but what about the backlink that you will get from each directory, is this not worth it also. I've heard of many sucess achieved from directory submission in terms of the backlinks.

They are very low quality backlinks and can take a while to get indexed. Like i said its fine to submit to a few directories but there are many other ways to get traffic and backlinks that are more important and will be of much higher quality.
You have to remember directory links are one of the oldest link building tricks in the books so search engines are most likely going to devaule those links a lot unless its from a very big and trusted directory such as dmoz.
