Well, Wordpress is great regarding SEO but it's a platform based on blogs and not websites. You would not have a problem being reached by search engines, but you will have a blog and would need to write some custom code to do things that you want to and wordpress cannot do them for you. The good thing is that wordpress has some many plugins and is so customizable that it can quite easily become a miscellaneous website for most needs. But certainly that depends really on what you want to do.

It would be quite strenuous to do a plain website using wordpress but yes, it can be done if you're ready to customize things

I'm thinking you could do a website with WP if all you write are pages - no blogging. Pages are static. But then you'd have to figure out how to manipulate your menu/navigation, because WP places all pages in the menu -- at least my template does. Why not just get a regular website and see if you can find a similar template? Maybe contact the template creator?

WordPress websites are actually very common...in fact, I've built quite a nice living doing just that for my web design clients.

Take a look at sites such as:

doglirious.com
dinerdave.com

and even my own portfolio site at juscott.com.

Do you think these are "blogs"...or "websites"? If you can't tell then I won't either

Traditionally, WordPress has been synonymous with "blog"...but no more. You can build an extremely powerful website nowadays.

you can definitely use wordpress in building a website. Wordpress, has websites that incorporate blogs also.

Take a look at this link, this will help you tremendously!

I agree with using Wordpress to manage content for a web site. If I were to remove the post dates on my blog, each page would look more like a static page than a post.

You can also modify the home page to remove the chronological order of the posts being displayed.

If you categorize the pages, then you can include the category in the permalink to easily provide some organization for your posts, as well as additional keywords for search engines.

Using Static Pages without comments in Wordpress pretty much gives you the Website feel. As far as navigation is concerned, it's mainly a matter of finding the theme which most closely meets your requirements or learning enough CSS & PHP to do your own mods.

The neat thing about Wordpress is its Content Management System.
You can select or create a new theme and change the entire look and feel of your site without having to re-do or re-insert all of your content. That beats having to redesign your entire site using manual HTML, CSS, & PHP.

you can go to wordpress.com and get your free site , once you login you can get your own name.wordpress.com/wp-admin, if you dont like your long name you also can buy your own domain hosting with them, to get maximum SEO benefit, I suggest you to buy your own hosting, because wordpress blog do not give you space to install new plugin, so give small investment with it, I am sure you wont sorry about it because so much fun you can do with wordpress personal hosting

Yes, you can use WordPress to build your own website. But you have to customize it since by default it comes with a bloggy style. And about doing well in search engine rankings, I don't know if a website would do well than a blog. But if you use WordPress there are many WordPress SEO plugins that you can download and install that can help your website with SEO.
