Thread: From Blogger to WordPress

Okay everyone I have decide to take the plunge and move to WordPress. (Can I get an amen!). My current adsense earnings will more than pay for the hosting fees.

Anyways, for those that have done it, I have been told it is easy.

I have a few questions:

1. Would it affect my current pages listed in Google? What visitors still get the correct pages, or will they end up with 404?

2. Would I need to move my domain name over, or can I setup my template first before moving my domain name?

From what I have read WordPress allows you to import Blogger posts and comments, so I'm not too concerned about that...unless I need to be.

When I do move over, I will probably do it on a weekend when I receive less visitors and I don't publish any posts.

OK, to answer your questions...

1) After you finished migrated/importing all your pages to WordPress, it's important to do a redirect so that anytime someone lands on one of your old blogger pages, they get redirected.

Now I must admit, my blog was not nearly as trafficked as yours when I switched so I didn't have as much of a concern about rankings. At the time I made the switch, most of my traffic to my blog was coming from my main site. Nevertheless I think that site will be of great help to you.

2) Do you have Windows? If so, follow my instructions on setting up WordPress on your PC first. This will give you a fully functional working version of WordPress on your PC. You can export your posts out of blogger and into this local version of WordPress for testing, design updates, etc.

One tip: Before you import your posts into WordPress, make sure you select "No Archive" in your Blogger account, otherwise it will only grab the first post of every month. It took me forever to figure out why WordPress was only getting one post each month.

I think you'll be fine. I would highly recommend installing wordpress on your machine first. That way you can test everything. And the nice thing is, all your blog files are saved in one folder. So when you're ready to go live, you'll just upload that entire folder to the same area of your host.

I signed up with a host, but am still pointing my domain to my Blogger blog until I get my template finalized.

I have followed your instructions and installed WordPress locally, and imported my posts and comments from Blogger.

Next up is to finalize my template. Good thing I created mine manually so I know how it fits together.

you should get everythings done before you moved you domain

I have been thinking about changing my eBlogger blog to a Wordpress blog and found this post on a search. Lisas reply answers some of my questions but I have some others.

1. I was looking into ways of getting more traffic to my eBlogger blog and I thought that I might do better with WP. Is this so regardless of anything else?

2. My domain name is part of the eBlogger system so what would I do about that?

3. I want to shorten the domain name anyway as the other was too long and set up as part of another site that I no longer have online. Is this going to cause any problems with the redirect that Lisa suggested?
