Can You Purchase Products Through Own Amazon Affiliate Link?

Hi, I have just signed up for the Amazon affiliate program. I'm not expecting to make much from it, but I thought that I might as well sign up for the program since I write the odd book review in my blog. Anyways, I was wondering if I'm allowed to purchase products through my own Amazon affiliate link.

I remember reading that if you do, the will take the sale away. It is definitely frowned upon by them. A long time ago you could, but they watch for that now.
