There are 2 ways to do this...
Create an inhouse affiliate program that you host. There is more technical work involved with this option and not ideal for beginners. There are some affiliate software solutions you can buy/download and install on your domain to manage the actual program.
Or you can outsource it through a network like CJ or ShareASale. The downside is this is the most expensive way but they will create all your links and do a lot of account management for you.
So I would definitely make sure you have the traffic, income and expertise to support either method before jumping into this. I don't know much about this myself but Allan Gardyne has some info over at his site...

Thanks Lisa,
Starting a affiliate program seems like a bit of work, which will require research.. As I plan to open a affiliate program for my ebooks in the future. I intend on doing my research on the cost and work / time it will be involved on doing this

Hi
Just to add to Lisa's post.
Although it is possible to go it alone. It's very difficult to recruit affiliates unless you have a well known store and a proven track record.
From what I've heard CJ are rather more expensive than some of the other network. I would first check with Affiliate Future and ShareASale. As has been mentioned in other posts Brian, the CEO of SAS, is very helpfull and proactive.
I've also heard that Geno Prussakov's book A Guide to Affiliate Marketing is a good reference for merchants.
Regards
Bob

Yes, CJ is very expensive. I've heard ShareASale is the most economical, especially for startups. Good link Bob!

out of the affiliates i have on my site, my favorite is SAS.
Their website is very user friendly as well as their customer service.
And ironically, they are the ONLY aff. prog. com. i've earned a decent commission with since first putting aff. on my site.
i've not earned one commission ever with CJ - which is strange because their vendors are very similar to SAS's vendors. so there's no reason i shouldn't have by now. which makes me think their code is easily "mess-up-able" and it's my fault??
good luck!

@Donk: Thank you for mentioning my book, Bob.
@Rammuny: Since it's a digital product you're going to marketing through the affiliate channel, you may also want to look into ClickBank. CJ (with their $3000 setup fee and $500 monthly minimum) may not be the right network for you. ShareASale and AffiliateFuture are excellent options too. SaS isn't necessarily big on eBooks merchants, but is certainly outstanding in customer care, and their ethical stand.

Does Lisa offer an affiliate program with her products?
I also need to ask Yaro Starak the same thing.
These are the two people I am putting my trust in right now INCLUDING all of the major players!

I don't have any products that I sell directly so I would have no need for an affiliate program of my own. I only promote other people's products. Yaro does have an affiliate program, however, through ClickBank so you can promote his Blog Mastermind course. You can just go to his site and sign up.

Affiliate Network upside...
One thing to remember about joining an Affiliate Network like Commission Junction or Share A Sale is they have hundreds of thousands of affiliates already. Your program will be presented to all of them.
They also add credibility and trust so you definitely will get more people to join than if you tried to go it alone. Affiliates are very concerned about accurate tracking and reporting and of course payment. An affiliate network takes care of all that. It may well be worth the money.
But as Lisa says you want to make sure you have a great site that converts well and your shopping experience is working perfectly. Affiliates won't waste time on programs that don't deliver.
