Question Adsense Questions

The other thread that mentioned Adsense made me think of this. I don't have a site launched yet but when I do I will definitely use Adsense ads. I have a couple of questions though...

1) How do you know how much you'll earn from your ads? Is there any way to tell what types of subjects pay the most?

2) I guess I don't understand why Google would actually pay us to display their ads. So they're giving some of the money away to us that advertisers are paying them for the ads?

Just want to make sure I understand everything.

Hi Greenthumb,

1) Google doesn't publish how much you'll earn per ad/niche. But you can assume that sites which target popular keywords such as sex, money, employment, etc. will have higher paying ads, thus meaning you'd earn more per click. However the downside to creating sites in these niches is that there is an awful lot of competition so getting ranked well for these keywords is extremely difficult.

2) Google is ingenious for creating this program. If you think about it, the reason Google is so popular is because it returns relevant results. So this attracts advertisers to advertise on Google - that's how they make their money.

By creating a program like AdSense, they encourage people like us to create content rich sites that only helps make their engine more useful and more popular to keep attracting even more advertisers. That's the whole bottom line - the advertisers. In addition, with us helping them advertise by displaying these ads on our pages, the advertisers are getting more traffic to their ads. So it's a win-win-win for everyone.

Google gets paid by advertisers, advertisers get more traffic to their ads because we are helping them advertise. And because we want to make money we keep creating more content for our sites.

So yes, Google will gladly pay us part of their advertising revenue because we are indirectly helping them attract more advertisers through building useful websites.

Gotta luv Google.

Wow, Lisa. Great. Thanks so much. I guess I never fully understood the whole concept of why AdSense worked and now that you've fully explained how Google benefits it totally makes sense. Can't wait to get started.

Do you have to have a certain number of pages before they accept you?

Nope, google will allow you to put their ads on any page you have access to (with certain exceptions, of course). My first use of AdSense was on my blog, actually.

By the way, does anyone know of a good impression based ad system? I'm thinking about putting one at the bottom of all of my websites. Any suggestions? (no pop-up based ad companies, though..ugh.)

I've always heard you want to have at least 10-15 pages before you submit your application then again I've heard of others having 5 or less pages and getting in. I guess if your site or blog looks like it has potential and well organized they'll let you in with fewer pages.

My brother had a 5 page site and got rejected. Although I will say his site was all over the place and not focused.

Default Google Adsense - been there, done that and...

Hi WebSite Babble Friends,

OK - I joined Google Nov 2005 and published Google Ads on my (4 page) website.
I began making money from Google Ads right away, and within 3 months I was making over $500 monthly!
However, Google thought I was violating their terms by using unauthorized methods of website exposure (eg. autosurf programs), and cancelled my account; but they did send me my final payment.

I looked for another publisher and joined AdBrite (similar to Google Adsense) in Feb 2006, and now receive cheques (checks) averaging $100 monthly every month. Anyone can do this with minimum effort. Great details can be found here:

a) I read from someone's experience that google adsense typically pay about $0.15 per click (and not dollars per click)... is that an average figure to expect? can someone share personal experience?

b) Do people really click on the adverts? How many clicks would be a typical good month?

seb07, there's no fixed amount for clicks. You get different amounts for clicks depending upon how high the advertiser has bid for the keyword. For example, I once got $0.48 and once only $.015. (Actually, i've never gone above $1!!). Some clicks may get you above a dollar. So it's always different.

Usually, it depends on the niche. For example, ads related to webhosting pay the best. Because of smart pricing, the ppc has decreased and is decreasing gradually.

Yes people really do click on the ads. The ads are relevant and unless inspected closely will not appear like ads to the layman. Bigger ad blocks convert well for this reason as the fact that they are ads is not obvious.

Smart pricing is basically a method used to lower costs for the advertiser (adwords users). If costs are lower for the advertiser then payout is lower for the publisher (Adsense users). See here for more info.
