It depends on the site I guess. I tried AdBrite's inline ad service for about a day on the site but I hated how it interfered with the text. To me it looked sort of cheesy. One thing I don't like about them is you can't really control how many words get linked so you could have an article with 20 or so inlinks and to me it looks distracting.

Same with the inline ads publisher I'm using which is Kontera (http://kontera.com). If the page is small it will only put one or two ads (if any). But as the page get's more and more content, the more that gets underlined. I don't know if there is an upper limit to how many in line ads show up but I hear in text advertising can have good payouts if you have a good niche.
