Yep, I would also speculate that Adwords (or Google Ads) is probably Google's largest source of income. However, since the company went public, I am sure that got them a nice chunk of change also

Of course, Adsense is an outlet that allows Google to share the money paid by advertisers for Adwords ads with different website owners.
Pretty smart, really. I would assume that it must have been in their business plan as they were just starting out. Maybe not. I have read articles about the start-up of Google, but it would be interesting to read an article about the process that Google went through to develop as the business it is today.
