How do you know if your ads are working properly?

I just posted a comment on another thread about adsense. which got me to thinkning............. how do you know if your ads are working properly? It is against the adsense policy to click on your own ads. So what can you do to check if they are working?

You do nothing but trust Google. That's all you can really do. If you are seeing impressions in your stats after visiting your pages you have to assume clicks will record too.
