i just read the USA Today article and one thing comes to mind...
the guy that made the $100+ website concentrated on handy-man things right? that would include maybe do-it-yourself projects, etc. the economy isn't looking too good these days (especially with gas prices on the rise), people are looking for many ways to budget there expenses and overall spending. one of those budget cuts would be in regards to any upgrades done to homes (for homeowners), etc. now, if someone has a handy-man website, i'm sure that the ads that google places on them would turn out to be from contractors who specialize in decks, sideing and similar projects.
i'm sure that the cost per click on those ads would be amazing, and would continue to be because they've got the money to advertise, especially the large contractor companies and with the many that are out there, it doesn't seem impossible.
so the niche of home 'anything' would attract a more cost per click amount because of those ads... what do you guys think?

I don't know about the CPC (cost per click) for those ads, but I would also think that the ads would be pretty well targeted, thus giving him a higher click-thru ratio. I went to his site and when I looked at the AdWords ads that showed up they seemed very well targeted so I'm sure that, along with his high traffic levels are really working in his favor.
But I agree, "the do-it-yourself home improvement" arena is very hot niche. Almost everyone I know is addicted to HGTV!
