Your initial question is related to adsense ads correct? If so, log into your Google Adsense account.
Under "AdSense Setup", you will find a "Competitive Ad Filter". Here, you can indicate the urls that you do not want to reflect. As you'll see, you can be as specific or vague as you'd like.
Also under the "AdSense Setup" tab, you will find an "Ad Review Center" link that allows you to block certain ad categories.
Lastly, what I've found is Google Adsense is VERY sensitive to the content of your page. What this means is even though a blog is a free expression type environment, you need to put thought into your keywords or you will have ads that seemingly does not match your content.
As an example, my site is geared towards single mothers; however, because my writing hasn't been specific (the basics of internet writing), ads for "single women dating services" and "poverty" have appeared.
Hope this helps with one piece of your question.
