Creativity is so key. Some people are great at writing killer headlines and getting the click but can't convert the sale once the visitor lands on the landing page. It takes a lot of practice. My ROI is nothing where I'd like it to be but I'm making a profit and trying to really work on my ad copy if I don't like the merchant's sales page.

Some products have a strong enough sales page where you don't need to create your own landing page. I promote a lot of Clickbank products and if you've ever noticed that many of the clickbank product landing pages are very well written with good sales copy. Occasionally I'll write something myself using a squeeze page but most of the time I try to find products with good sales pages so I don't have to re-write anything.

Clickbank also lets you sort products by "Gravity". In other words they tell you how many distinct affiliates earned money promoting the book over a given period. If the gravity is high it usually means the product is new and/or converting well. If it's too high I try to stay away because that means there are probably a lot of AdWords campaigns on it but if it's too low that means it's probably hard to convert. So I try to find products with a mid-Gravity.

For example, go to Google and type in "keyword elite" with no quotes. (Keyword Elite is a Clickbank product) Look at all the adwords campaigns on the right. I tend to stay away from products with a lot of advertisers. Yes, this product probably converts pretty well but there's too much competition.

That's why I always suggest getting a good book on how to get the most out of AdWords before trying it. You can lose a lot of money. I sure did in the beginning and my ROI is still not where I want it to be.
