As Lisa said in the beginning no one is really going to your site anyway so go ahead and publish the pages as you go.

Doesn't this depend on whether or not your page has been spidered yet. For me, it usually takes a couple of weeks for the SE's to initially spider a new page. But I always end up adding a link to the page
before the SE's find it.
You shouldnt have an orphaned page in your site for too long. But I think it's okay if you leave it orphaned for only a few days. You should make sure you have enough content on a page in order to publish it by the time it's spidered.
