I usually develop my sites for 800x600, but I decided to go wider (900px) on my new redesign. It appears that 8% of my visitors are at 800x600 resolution and the majority now seem to use 1024x768. I may lose some of those 8%, and I have accepted that.

I agree with the text sizes. I take it you mean in points? A larger text size makes the site easier to read for those who have difficulty reading small text.

The other question is what are people using for measurements: pixels, points, or em?
