The main traffic building techniques I've used lately have all been free and they include, continuously updating content, adding my own YouTube videos, interlinking articles between my blog and site, and posting in related forums.
I agree and do most of that. I was thinking that submission to directories and RSS couldn't hurt and was looking for a painless (if there is such a thing) way of getting it done.

Actually, the blog/site has been up for 3 weeks and I've gotten over 1,000 visitors total and average about 20-30 a day just doing the stuff above and bookmarking a few posts so I'm with on this one.

DO you have a reason why you want to maiximize your back links?
Yea. The base domain/keywords are general and have have a lot of competition. The combination of standard SEO WITH backlinks gets you higher on Google's search results. I'm building my own in the way Lisa suggests but wanted to see if I could put my site in directories as a quick way for some more.

I'm getting search engine traffic from long tail phrases and wind up on the first and second pages with those so I got excited and wanted some more

The last thing I'm going to do is buy high PR links. It artificially inflates the site and once you can't pay for them you loose. Besides PR is just a measure of popularity via backlinks plus whatever Google doesn't tell you. So if a "popular" site thinks your worth linking to then your site must be worthy of a higher rank and should be seen when people search.

It really does work. The problem is people abuse it inflate their site unnaturally. Google's knows about and I'm sure they'll do something about it sooner or later. Links from sites in your niche are safe--hight PR or not.

I'll probably do it my self...a few a day like I do when i read and comment on blogs etc

Oh yea the other dirty secret of PR is the data is about 3-6 months old. Google recently updated PR and a lot of sites lost when they cleaned house. They probably won't do it again for 3-6 months.
