I have no idea about xhtml or html.
But if you squeeze your browser in you will find that my site "sucks in" to fit inside the browser (there is also a minimum size) ...
And I assure you I used the variable template, not the fixed width (don't know any more ins and outs of it than - it works)
So I guess there is more than one way to skin a cat!
