Default How to leave room?

That's a good question to raise here. I've wondered about the column widths for the right column and when/how to place it myself.

I remember Lisa saying that she goes wider than the older suggestion of 800 pixels for overall width since almost all monitors are wider now. What I am doing on a site I am working with now is to work with two columns, left navigation and center text. I made it 800 pixels overall with the idea that I can leave that width (at least approximately) and ad on the right column later to primarily (not totally) enclose ads.

My thinking is that I don't want to place ads until I have good content and hits. At the same time I want to work with a main column that I won't change later so that I can style it (including images, etc.) in a way that won't have to be a major concern later as far as layout adjustments.

I would appreciate hearing what strategy others with some experience have found to be a good over plan.
