Hi Vashti and welcome,
I've moved your thread to the Site Build It! forum since your post was pretty specific to that topic. Don't forget to tell your mom that you have 30 days to try SBI! and you can get a full refund if you're not satisfied.
I will tell you this, if you do have the type of personality that gets bored easily and likes to move from one thing to another, then you definitely need patience with SBI!. Actually you need patience whether you use them or not because it takes time to build a successful website. Months and maybe even years, depending on the person, topic, etc. I just want to be upfront because a lot of people buy SBI! and want to rush through the whole process (ignoring parts of the guide) because they just want to launch their site quickly.
I believe SBI! would be great for your situation as long as you plan to follow the guide and realize there is work involved. Spend a lot of time thinking about your topic because ultimately you want to choose something that you feel you can continue to write about for the long haul. You don't want to choose something and then after the 3rd month you've run out of things to say. SBI! will guide you through the brainstorming parts when you buy it but I think that's a very important part. I've created so many sites that have failed because I had a great idea, but as I began to develop the site, I realized that I wasn't as passionate about it in the beginning so I got bored.
As I said, whether you use SBI! or not, topic choice is important so it's best you pick which you feel you're most comfortable with. You can make money with virtually any topic. That's not the issue. Just make sure you really do have enough useful and unique (very important) info to share.
Travel sites can be good but it's important you don't fall into a common trap and just produce standard facts about a city that can be found anywhere. I get a lot of emails from people who have created travel-related SBI! sites who have all this great information about a city but then wonder why they have no traffic. The reason is usually the site is not unique or useful enough. For example, if you are going to create a site about Las Vegas, it's fine to have some generic Vegas info but your site should also not be a re-write of lasvegas.com. You want to provide some audience-specific advice that people can't find elsewhere.
Or sometimes people don't narrow their niche enough. For example instead of doing a site on Las Vegas, it may be best to break it down to Las Vegas shows and just focus on the shows, ticket prices, concert dates, etc. The more focused your site is, the easier it will be to draw in targeted traffic.
I hope you don't think my reply is discouraging, but I just want to educate you on what you are getting into before you create a site whether you use SBI! or not. SBI! is an awesome tool and will give you the guidance you need. Just be prepared to supply your own BAM (brains and motivation).
Since you work for Continental Airlines and travel a lot you probably have a lot of inside knowledge about travel that the average person doesn't. That can really work in your favor when choosing your topic.
Hope that helps!
