Hosting process was the real culprit.
Almost all of this sounds as if it was do the the basic web hosting process rather than the Word Press, so everyone new to this subject should take note. Whenever you have hosting at a different host than the one with the registration you have this same issue with any site setup of any kind.
Your new hosting company should have told you about the two (sometimes three) DNS codes as part of the hosting set up. A lot of hosts have registrations fixed where you can manage and change them yourself which is handy for all concerned, but in any case this has to be done before hosting from a second party can work.
If that had been done before you ever started setting up Word Press it would have saved you a lot of grief. Perhaps others will learn from your experience and avoid it. Sorry you had to go through it, but unfortunately most of us learn a lot of what we know by going through such testing.
