this is a tough question, it would come down to what topic your focusing on and where people interested in your site would visit around the web. This is the first thing you'd have to figure out.
Me.. im not into advertising much, ive never bought advertising and probably never will, i find alot of it to be quite a waste of money, im more into self promotion, which gives me a warm fuzzy feeling when it pays off. Over an empty bank account from advertising.
Advertising does have its strong points and while i can understand why alot of people use it, its just not for me. (so dont start flaming me with 'omg sif not use advertising')
